Short answer: a personalized laser cut steel sign from a US maker typically runs $60 to $120 for 18 to 24 inches, and $120 to $250 for 30 to 48 inches. Below about $40 for a 24 inch piece, something has been substituted — usually the thickness of the steel.
Where the money actually goes
The steel
16 gauge American steel is roughly 0.060 inches thick. It is heavier and more expensive than the 18 or 20 gauge used in cheaper signs, and it is the single biggest driver of what a piece feels like in the hand.
Cutting time
Laser time is priced by the minute, and intricate designs take longer. A detailed family tree costs more to cut than a plain rectangle with a name, even at the same overall size.
Deburring
Cut steel leaves sharp edges and slag. Removing it is hand work and it is the step most often skipped on cheap signs. You can feel the difference immediately along the edges.
Powder coating
Powder is applied electrostatically then cured in an oven. That is equipment, energy and time — far more than spraying a coat of paint, and the reason the finish lasts years outdoors rather than months.
Packaging and shipping
Steel is heavy and corners bend. Proper packaging costs real money, and signs that arrive bent were usually cheap to pack.

Five signs a cheap listing will disappoint
- No gauge stated. The one specification that most affects the product, and the one most often omitted.
- "Powder coated look" or just "painted". Read carefully — the wording is usually doing work.
- No weight listed. Weight is a proxy for thickness and hard to fake.
- Only rendered images. If there is no photo of a real finished sign on a real wall, ask why.
- A price that does not change with size. Material is a real cost; if a 36 inch costs the same as an 18 inch, something is off.
