Garage walls are the most forgiving decorating project in the house and the most commonly under-done. The room is large, the ceilings are high, and nobody is worried about matching a colour scheme. The only real constraint is that whatever goes up has to survive dust, damp and the occasional knock.
Start with the one sign that names the space
Before the layout, the anchor: a sign with his name, the shop name, or the year the garage was set up. It turns storage into a room with an owner. Everything else arranges around it.
Fifteen layouts that work
- Above the workbench. Centred, about two thirds of the bench width.
- Beside the roller door. The tall narrow strip almost everyone wastes.
- Over the tool chest. Same two-thirds rule as furniture.
- The back wall statement. One large piece, 36 inches or more.
- Parking sign at bay height. Where a real parking sign would sit.
- Pegboard border. Signs framing the pegboard rather than competing with it.
- The bar corner. Smaller pieces, closer together, lower on the wall.
- Between the windows. Vertical designs for vertical gaps.
- Above the door into the house. Overlooked, always empty, easy win.
- Mechanic wall. A cluster of shop and mechanic pieces as one group.
- Vehicle silhouette on a plain wall. Let it be the only thing there.
- Stacked pair on a narrow pier. Two pieces, even gap.
- Over a gym bench. Garage gyms are half of garages now.
- Ceiling-height for a tall shop. Large piece, hung at normal height, height filled by the piece itself.
- Shop office wall. Smaller and denser, since it is viewed from a desk.
Sizing for a shop wall, not a hallway
An 18 inch sign that looks generous on a desk disappears on a garage wall. Start at 24 inches and go up. For a full back wall, 36 inches is a reasonable minimum. Garage walls punish under-sizing more than any other room because there is so little else on them for scale.

Unfinished drywall
Often thinner and less forgiving than interior drywall. Find a stud if you can; use toggle bolts if not.
Painted concrete block
Masonry bit plus a concrete screw rated for the weight. Vacuum the dust out of the hole before driving the screw or it will not seat properly.
Bare stud walls
The easy case — screw straight into the stud with a washer.

What to actually put on the sign
Use his words, not yours. If he says the shop, the sign should say shop, not garage. If there is a nickname the family uses for the space, use that. Personalization that borrows your vocabulary is just a label with a name on it.
The piece that only exists in one garage
