What Size Metal Wall Art Should You Hang Above a Sofa?

Short answer: aim for art that spans about two thirds of the sofa width, hung 6 to 10 inches above the back cushions. For a standard 7 foot sofa that is roughly 56 inches of art.
Below are the worked numbers for every common size, including the awkward cases.
The two-thirds rule, in actual inches

Two thirds is a target, not a law. Anywhere between 60 and 75 percent looks right. Below half the sofa width starts to look like a mistake.
Height: measure from the sofa, not the floor
Eye-level rules are for empty walls. Above furniture, the sofa sets the height. Leave 6 to 10 inches from the top of the back cushions to the bottom of the art. Closer than 6 and it looks crowded; further than 10 and the two objects stop belonging together.
If the sofa has a tall back, measure from the actual top of the back, not from the seat.
Sizing a pair or a group
Treat the whole arrangement as one rectangle. Two 24 inch pieces with a 6 inch gap is a 54 inch arrangement, not a 24 inch one. Keep gaps consistent — 3 to 6 inches between pieces is the usual range, and the gap should be smaller than the narrowest piece.
Sectionals
Do not measure the whole sectional. Measure the longest straight run and centre the art on that, ignoring the return. Centring on the full footprint puts the art somewhere nobody sits facing.
When the sofa is not centred on the wall
Centre the art on the sofa, not the wall. The eye reads the furniture and the art as a group, and a group that is off-centre on a wall looks intentional. Art centred on a wall but off-centre above the sofa looks like an error.
Common mistakes
- Buying to a budget rather than to a measurement. A too-small piece is money spent on something that will always look wrong.
- Hanging at eye level above furniture. That leaves a gap of 18 inches or more and breaks the grouping.
- Measuring the frame instead of the hanger. The hanger goes on the screw, so the hanger is what you measure down from the top edge.
Weight, and what it means for hanging
