Split Letter Monogram Signs: How They Work and How to Choose One

A split letter monogram is the design where a single large initial sits at the centre and the full family name runs horizontally through the middle of it, splitting the letter into a top and bottom half.
It is the most requested personalized layout we cut, and the one people have the most questions about before ordering.
Which initial goes in the middle?
The last name initial. The name running through it is the same last name written out. So the Miller family gets a large M with Miller through it.
This confuses people who know the traditional three-letter monogram, where the last initial sits larger between the two first initials. That is a different convention used for linens and stationery. A split letter monogram sign is one initial and one name.
Hyphenated, blended and unmarried households
Hyphenated names
Two options: use the first surname's initial with the full hyphenated name through it, or skip the split letter design and use a plain name sign. Long hyphenated names get cramped inside a single letter.
Blended families with two surnames
A split letter forces you to pick one surname, which is often the wrong message. An established sign or a welcome sign avoids the problem entirely.
Unmarried couples
Same issue. Use the address or a welcome design instead.
Adding a year
Most of our split letter designs can carry an established year below the name. Use the year the household began as they would define it — the year they married, or bought the house, or moved in together. It is rarely the year on a certificate, and it is worth asking rather than assuming.

Which finish
Black reads against almost every wall colour and is the default for a reason. Copper and bronze warm up rooms with a lot of white. White works on a dark door or a dark accent wall. Contrast between the sign and the wall behind it matters more than the colour itself, because the whole design depends on the negative space being visible.
Spelling: the one thing to double check
We cut exactly what you type, character for character, and we do not autocorrect capitalisation or spacing. If it is a gift, check the spelling against something written — an envelope, an email signature, their own social profile — rather than from memory.
